Eight tips for creating a stand-out Christmas ad (without a multimillion-pound budget)

Home > Archive by category “News”

    Share

We all know the big players in the Christmas ad game these days. The likes of John Lewis and Sainsbury’s part with a huge chunk of their budget each year to pull on public heartstrings (and hopefully their purse strings!)

That being said, you don’t need to have an eye-watering budget to make a successful Christmas ad. As the day gets ever closer, read on as we share eight tips for creating stand-out Christmas ads without a multimillion-pound budget.

    1. Refresh and update content

You don’t necessarily need to start from scratch when planning your Christmas content. Think about the brand assets you already have available and work out if you can edit rather than reshoot.

Can you change the music, voice-over, or sound overall? Can you edit the special offer? How about the end frame or titles? With post-production, there are loads of ways you can strategically adapt what you already have to save yourself time and money.

    2. Stay authentic

With so much competition for consumers’ attention (and money), it can be easy to try and shout the loudest, but you risk getting lost in the noise.

Before you plan any activation, sit back and work out the story your brand really wants to tell. Is it authentic to your offering?

Last year, we worked with Bloom & Wild to create a non-traditional Christmas ad. We had fun building a CGI fairy, with the campaign emphasising the importance of small gestures over giant acts.

    3. Keep it simple

There’s no need to over-complicate! It may surprise you to learn that an animated TVC can be done in just 10 days. If you have a cracking idea, it can be easier than you think to bring it to life.

    4. Think social

With many of the best-known brands tending to take the big TV spots, you could focus on social for a fraction of the price.

Create a high-quality Christmas ad made just for your social channels and invest in paid media to target your content to your target audience.

    5. Do your research

For example, it’s likely alcohol may feature in a Christmas setting so make sure you’ve checked advertising regulations wherever you are in the world. You can always chat to us about this too!

If you do forget something along the way, don’t panic—we can still fix it for you in post-production. For example, we could make open bottles appear closed and turn empty glasses into full ones to make sure the content adheres to local advertising rules.

    6. All about versioning

The holiday season translates! You could create different versions of your Christmas ads to make sure you’re relevant for each market. This could be a useful tool to break into new regions too.

    7. Plan early

Of course, it’s such an important time of year that production houses can get booked up months in advance. We can still help and can scale up and down quickly to make sure you get your content out in time.

    8. Enjoy yourself!

And last but not least, a personal tip from the POD team—enjoy the moment! After a difficult two years, we can finally hug and spend Christmas together again.

    Let’s work together

With Christmas just two months away, time’s ticking but there’s still time to create high-quality festive content that gets you noticed. We can help you with all things post-production, with services including storyboarding, motion design, animation, and VFX all charged at £250 per day. Whether you already use B2B post-production as part of your day-to-day marketing activities or are beginning to think about formalising your process, read on to find out why it matters and how we can help you take your content production to the next level.

    WHAT IS B2B POST-PRODUCTION?

It’s creating and adding effects to films or recordings that are then shared internally or with other businesses. It could involve anything from animating explainer videos to adding effects to webinars.

     OUR EXPERTISE INCLUDES…

    • Internal updates
    • Explainers
    • Launches
    • Tutorials
    • Product videos
    • Webinars
    • Mood films
    • Online learning
    • Talking heads

    CLICK ON THE VIDEOS BELOW!

Whatever your pace, brief, or budget, we can produce stand-out content to make sure your message is heard loud and clear!

As you can see, B2B animation  can also help to break down more complex subjects.

    WHY USE B2B POST-PRODUCTION?

1: Sales: It’s no secret that videos sell. Research in The State of Video Marketing report found that 78% of video marketers say video has directly helped increase sales.

2: Value for money: Depending on the brief, you can create high-quality content without breaking the bank.

3: Reach new buyers: Perhaps in the past, you’ve relied on a smaller set of personal contacts to generate sales. With B2B post-production, you can produce relevant content that is suitable for a wider audience.

4: Drum up excitement: Depending on the subject, B2B content can run the risk of being a little… dry at times. With post-production, you can up the creativity and find novel ways of capturing people’s attention.

    TIP FROM THE EXPERTS

Audio is as important as video. When people record on Zoom or any other non-professional device, they often forget about the audio quality and it’s harder to fix.

Chat with us to make sure everything is in place to capture the best quality audio. We can help you with external mics and recording equipment or with setting up your laptop and/or mobile devices.

  • How to make standout NFTs

    How to make standout NFTs

Home > Archive by category “News”

    Share

With interest in NFTs only growing, read on to find out how we can help you capitalize on the trend and take your content to the next level.

However much you know about NFTs, one thing that’s for certain is they no longer can or should be viewed as a niche term for the tech community—they’re heading for the mainstream (if they’re not there already).

    Last year the NFT market
nearly surpassed the global traditional art market, with an NFT selling for an eye-watering $69m. Artist Damien Hirst has recently launched his first NFT collection and fashion houses around the world are beginning to incorporate NFTs into their looks, often blending the physical world with the digital.

Here at POD LDN, we’re seeing NFT requests almost daily, so we thought we’d fill you in on how
the industry is shifting, some projects we’ve been working on, and (all importantly!) how we can help you.

    You can’t ignore NFTs

NFTs are already shifting the needle in the post-production process. We’ve seen a growing demand to create unique assets from content that people can keep as art, ultimately meaning a new step has been added to the post-production process.

It unlocks many opportunities. For example, brands can create campaigns with added elements for fans to collect, artists can unlock new revenue streams, film production companies can create and distribute NFTs from film sets to fund filmmaking. As well as the financial implications, NFTs serve as another valuable avenue for brands to build deeper engagement with their communities.

Even if you’re new to NFTs, it’s worth looking back at past campaigns and considering whether collateral could be repositioned and distributed as NFTs. Or if you’re in the process of launching a film, artwork, or exhibition, could you offer unique pieces of content that would genuinely excite and interest your audience? (We can help you with that).

With greater investment from companies including Meta, the interest in NFTs is only going to accelerate. As just one example, the film industry is increasingly adopting gaming tech, with software such as Unreal Engine rendering in real-time which speeds up the workflow. As tools become more accessible, demand for NFTs will no doubt continue to grow.

How we help brands create NFTs

From complex to simple, we’ve helped many of our clients in varying industries tread new ground and create NFTs. Some of our work is still in the works (watch this space!), but as one example:

    Emergent Games

We create NFTs for the leading metaverse and blockchain games studio, Emergent Games. Its latest post-apocalyptic sci-fi game with blockchain integration, Resurgence, calls on users to re-establish their roles on earth after a cataclysmic ecological disaster.

We made 1,000 limited edition Cryotag NFTs that launch throughout the alternative reality game and can be minted for free. The Cryotags unlock perks such as access to merchandise, events and private groups, as well as multiple in-game functionalities that are revealed throughout the game.

The team aims to breathe new life into blockchain games by creating fun, immersive experiences as well as an economic pull for its players.

To support the new MMO (massively multiplayer online game), we also created six high-end, 3D animations to drum up excitement for its launch.

“At Emergent, we have a keen attention to detail which meant we needed a partner who could understand our direction and be able to bring that to life. As a team we had a range of very specific elements, designs, and a look that we wanted to achieve. Being able to work so collaboratively with POD was key to enabling us to get the results we were looking for, not just in the construction of the video, but also in the animation and render quality we we’re after. Myself and the team are incredibly pleased with the results and very proud to show them off.”
    Steven Huckle
    Art Direction, Emergent Games
“Emergent Games are on the cutting edge of blockchain technology so we’re so excited to partner with them. From producing Cryotag NFTs to beautiful promotional videos, our diverse services are a perfect fit for the team and we look forward to seeing our work out there in the real world.”
    Adrienn Major
    Founder, POD LDN

Here’s how we can help you

Whether you’re looking to turn your content into an NFT or are ready to create a larger NFT campaign, our experts can help advise you about how best to turn your NFT(s) from idea to reality.
Here are a few ways we can help:

    1. Scale
Via automation and generative design, we can help you create a 3D object, control the variables, and produce multiple versions in high volumes. Whether you need 10 or 10,000 unique assets, we can help you decide which way to go.

    2. Content
As well as more complex 3D NFTs, we can also turn more simple imagery like 2D static images into NFTs. This could involve writing scripts for After Effects or adding animation to the image to make the NFT stand out.

  • Animation 101: What is it and why use it?

Animation 101: What is it and why use it?

Home > Archive by category “News”

    Share

Whether you’re an animation aficionado, are about to lead your first animation project, or are curious about why you should even consider it, read our 101 to help answer your questions!

    WHAT IS IT?

Animation can vary in complexity, from adding movement to simple text all the way to more complex 3D objects. The Cambridge Dictionary defines the skill as: “Moving images created from drawings, models, etc. that are photographed or created by a computer.” Basically, the method manipulates figures or objects so they appear as moving images.

    There are five traditional types:

Cel (celluloid) animation: A traditional method of creating 2D animation by hand using sheets of transparent plastic called ‘cels’. It’s time-consuming (and costly) as it means the animator has to draw every single frame by hand.
2D animation: Relies on vector-based animations, which is useful for artists looking to create 3D characters as they can create digital skeletons known as rigs. It means single body parts can be moved at a time rather than the animator having to redraw the entire character for every touch of movement.
3D animation: Includes building digital objects and making them appear as if they’re moving through three-dimensional space. These days, it’s the most popular animation type within the film industry.
Motion graphics: Involves moving graphic elements, shapes, and text. Unlike the previous methods, it doesn’t so heavily rely on characters or storylines to bring it to life. It could be used for content including explainers or webinars.
Stop motion: Similar to traditional animation, this combines still images that are slightly different to show gradual movement. It involves taking a photo of a scene before slightly moving it and taking another photo.

There are many other animation types too, including simulation which relies on algorithms.

    OUR EXPERTISE

Whatever your animation requirements, we can work with you to produce a wide range of
    outputs, including:

    ● Social and digital content
    ● Banners
    ● Logos
    ● Billboards
    ● Films
    ● NFTs

Don’t just take our word for it… Check out our reel of some of our recent work.

    WHY ANIMATE?

    1. Cost: You can create high-quality content without needing a shoot, which can make it more cost-efficient.
    2. Brand: It can also help with brand identity, as the animation style can match each brand’s distinct personality.
    3. Storytelling: Whether a film or a piece of branded content, animation is a useful tool to help share emotions and ideas in an easy-to-understand and memorable way. It can also help to distil complex ideas simply.
    4. Views: It’s no secret that video is popular, and with stats like 82% of global internet traffic expected to come from video this year, it’s an opportunity not to be missed!

    TIP FROM THE EXPERTS

Make sure to have a full pre-production phase—it’ll save you time in the long run! Map everything out in detailed storyboards or previews before you go into production. This will help you work out any challenges ahead of time rather than fighting fires as you go.

    SOMETHING YOU MAY NOT KNOW…

Although it’s evolving all the time, animation is nothing new… The first-ever animated film, called
Fantasmagorie, was released in 1908. A long way from animation today, the movie features a stick person encountering morphing objects and was made by drawing each frame on paper and shooting on negative film.

    LET’S WORK TOGETHER

Our award-winning 2D and 3D artists cover all animation techniques. To keep things simple, we charge one transparent fee (£250 per weekday) and will work around the clock if you need us to. Let’s make great work together!

POD LDN shortlisted for StartUp Awards National Series

Home > Archive by category “News”

    Share

London -based POD LDN has been named one of the most exciting new businesses in the region after being shortlisted as part of a brand new awards programme.

The StartUp Awards National Series has been launched to recognise the booming startup scene across the UK which has accelerated since the pandemic began. In 2020, when most of the world was shutting down, more than 400,000 startups were set up in Britain, with similar increases seen in other European countries.

There was stiff competition with over 2,500 applications received in response to the Startup Awards National Series’ first-ever call for entries.

Supported nationally by BT, EY, Dell & Intel, the programme will celebrate the achievements of the amazing individuals across the UK who have turned an idea into an opportunity and taken the risk to launch a new product or service.

Co-founded by the team behind the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, the new series follows the success of the Wales StartUp Awards, after organisers recognised the exceptional potential in the startup scene across the other British regions.

Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE, the creator of the StartUp Awards National Series, said: “New firms are important for generating economic prosperity, employment opportunities and innovation. Since 2016, the Wales StartUp Awards have celebrated this amazing annual contribution to our economy by entrepreneurs and the impact they have on communities across the nation.

“Given the sheer volume of phenomenal startups we’ve heard from since then, as well as the huge post-pandemic shift in people’s desires to take their career in a new direction and set up a business against the odds, we felt it was the right time to take the programme nationwide. We’ve been blown away by the standard of entries in this first year and truly look forward to crowning the winners in June.”

    StartUp Awards National Series

The StartUp Awards National Series is a collaboration between the founders of the Great British Entrepreneur Awards – an established programme nationally receiving over 5,000 applications annually – and the Wales Start-Up Awards, the only regional awards currently celebrating new businesses in the UK.

The StartUp Awards National Series will recognise the achievements of those amazing individuals who have had a great idea, spotted the opportunity and taken the risks to launch a new product or service.

Already established and thriving in Wales, the StartUp Awards National Series is now taking the passion and drive to celebrate new business and extending across the whole of the United Kingdom.

  • Introducing POD, a disruptive post-production service redefining content creation

Introducing POD, a disruptive post-production service redefining content creation

Home > Archive by category “News”

    Share

In a world where the demand for high-quality content is stronger than ever, POD’s Founder, Adrienn Major, spotted a gap in the market that is bringing widespread change to the industry.

Opening its doors just weeks before the first UK lockdown, POD’s Founder, Adrienn Major, picked a risky time to launch the post-production service, POD. But now, as the company celebrates its second anniversary, it’s taken the post-production industry by storm and is delivering more than 500 projects per year across 12 countries.

After working in agencies like AMV BBDO, Adam & Eve DDB, RGA  for a decade, Adrienn knew post-production had to evolve to suit rapidly changing client needs.  “I noticed the way people work is changing,” she says. “Content production is in such high demand and right now, many agencies aren’t set up to respond as quickly as their clients need them to.”

Many agencies today either produce content with an in-house or post-house team. Working with freelancers in-house can lead to many challenges, such as extensive paperwork, spiralling costs, and a lack of transferable skills. Then with the introduction of the government’s IR35 legislation, paperwork became even more difficult.

Working in a post-house environment also has its challenges. They can be expensive with rate cards varying based on skill and many may not consider smaller jobs. “There are downsides of both,” says Adrienn, “so I thought it was the perfect climate to introduce an offering which is most like a post-house but operates more flexibly like an on-demand service.”

By introducing a hybrid solution between outsourced and in-house production, POD’s clients can reap all the benefits of an in-house production team at the cost of a freelancer. The idea is that POD makes the process of hiring specialists far more transparent and easier to manage—with all services offered on a flat day rate of £250 on weekdays and £350 on weekends, as well as hourly availability. It means that services including storyboarding, motion design, animation, VFX, colour grading, retouching, social/digital, versioning, service production, and TV playout are all offered at the same rate.

Launching with a fully remote, digital model, POD was perfectly placed to grow during lockdown when many clients and agencies were looking for new ways to source post-production needs.

The company now has offices in London and Budapest and operates from hubs in Frankfurt and Dubai. Next, they’ll be opening their doors in New York.

“We have a very flexible model which is quite a new thing to people because whenever they need us we’re available—we do night shifts, we work at weekends, we really work around the clock,” says Adrienn.

The team behind POD want to be a helping hand to agencies as the demand for content continues to grow. By working together, they hope agencies will be able to respond to clients’ briefs more quickly and more confidently.

“More and more people will want to find solutions to make content production faster and more efficient. We’re a growing network and instead of competing with businesses, we want to collaborate with them,” says Adrienn.
